What you need to know

What is a flight itinerary โ€” and why does India's eVisa portal ask for one before you've booked real flights?

India's eVisa form at indianvisaonline.gov.in asks for your return or onward flight details partway through the application โ€” before you're approved, and before it makes sense to have bought real tickets. The system is designed for you to have travel plans ready at submission time. With eVisa processing running 72 hours at standard (and up to 4โ€“5 days during peak Octoberโ€“March season), buying real return flights before approval carries real financial exposure. A Flightinary itinerary gives the portal exactly what it needs โ€” real GDS flight numbers, correct IATA routing โ€” delivered in minutes, with zero purchase risk.

What a flight itinerary is

A flight itinerary is a professionally formatted travel document generated from real-time GDS aviation data โ€” real flight numbers, real IATA airport codes, accurate airline names, departure and arrival times, and correct routing. It documents your planned travel for visa application purposes. It is not a paid booking, so there is no financial risk if your travel dates shift or your visa application takes a different turn.

Why not just buy a real ticket?

India's e-Tourist Visa is usually approved within 72 hours โ€” sometimes 24. But 'usually' is not 'always,' and peak periods can extend processing. Buying a real return ticket before visa approval means you may pay airline change fees if your dates shift, or lose your booking entirely if your visa is refused. On the 1-year and 5-year eVisa, pinning down a specific return date months in advance makes no sense. A flight itinerary keeps your options open.

Does Flightinary's itinerary work for India eVisa submissions?

Yes. Every Flightinary itinerary is generated from live aviation data with genuine flight numbers, correct airline codes, and proper IATA routing. It is formatted to meet the documentation standard expected by the Indian eVisa portal and by immigration officers at designated Indian international airports including Delhi (DEL), Mumbai (BOM), Bangalore (BLR), Chennai (MAA), Hyderabad (HYD), Kolkata (CCU), and Kochi (COK), among others.

Full document checklist

Everything you need for an India eVisa application

India's eVisa application is mostly digital โ€” you upload documents rather than attending an appointment. But the checklist is more detailed than many applicants expect. Go through every item before you submit, because incomplete applications are rejected and refunds of the visa fee are not guaranteed.

Apply for your India eVisa no more than 120 days and no fewer than 4 days before your intended arrival date. The 30-day eVisa is double entry; the 1-year and 5-year eVisa allow multiple entries with a maximum of 180 days per visit. Choose the right duration for your trip before you apply.

Identity & visa form

  • Valid passport

Minimum 6 months validity from date of arrival in India; at least 2 blank pages required

  • Scanned last page of passport

The page opposite the photo page showing spouse/guardian details โ€” required upload on eVisa form

  • Digital passport photo

Square format, white background, taken within 6 months โ€” required upload; specific size and format requirements apply

  • Completed eVisa application

Filled online at indianvisaonline.gov.in โ€” save your reference number at every stage

Travel itinerary

  • Flight itineraryWe provide this

Return or onward flight from India โ€” with real flight numbers, airline name, and IATA airport codes. Required supporting document for the India eVisa.

  • Accommodation confirmation

Hotel bookings, guesthouse confirmation, or an invitation letter from your host โ€” required for each stay location

  • Intended entry airport

Must be one of India's 33 designated eVisa airports โ€” Delhi (DEL), Mumbai (BOM), Bangalore (BLR), Goa (GOI), Chennai (MAA), Hyderabad (HYD), Kochi (COK), and others

  • Travel insurance

Not officially mandatory but strongly recommended โ€” medical costs in private Indian hospitals can be significant for international visitors

Financial proof

  • Bank statements

Last 3โ€“6 months showing consistent balance and sufficient funds โ€” approximately $50โ€“100 per day of stay as a general guide

  • Salary slips or employment proof

Last 3 months of payslips or an employment letter confirming your salary and position

  • Income tax returns

Last 2 years, if available โ€” useful for self-employed applicants and those with variable income

  • Sponsorship letter

If hosted or funded by an Indian resident, include their Aadhaar or PAN card, bank statement, and a signed invitation letter

Ties to home country

  • Employment letter

On company letterhead: your role, salary, leave approval dates, and confirmation of return to work โ€” highly valued by Indian immigration

  • Property or lease documents

Utility bills, rental agreement, or title deed at your permanent home address

  • Family ties

Marriage certificate, birth certificates of children at home โ€” demonstrates strong reason to return

  • Business or professional documents

For self-employed applicants: company registration, business licence, or CA certificate showing active business at home

"Ties to home country" is where most applications fail. India's eVisa is only valid for entry through 33 designated international airports and 5 seaports. It is NOT valid for land border crossings. If you plan to enter India overland from Nepal, Bhutan, or Sri Lanka, you will need a separate sticker visa from the Indian High Commission.

How your nationality affects your India eVisa application

India's e-Tourist Visa is available to over 160 nationalities โ€” with very low overall refusal rates. Nationals of Pakistan and Bangladesh are not eligible and must apply through the Indian High Commission. For all other nationalities, the eVisa is the standard route, and the process is largely straightforward.

Data based on Indian Ministry of External Affairs eVisa statistics and processing reports (2024โ€“2025). Fees vary by nationality โ€” the US fee structure differs from most others. Processing times are standard 72-hour track; peak periods (Octoberโ€“March travel season) may add 1โ€“2 days.

๐ŸŸข Low refusal rate (under 5%) โ€” USA (~2%), UK (~2%), Australia (~2%)

India's eVisa refusal rates are very low for eligible nationalities. Focus on a clean, complete application: correct passport scan, white-background photo, matching accommodation details, and your flight itinerary ready before you open the form. The most common cause of rejection is inconsistent or missing upload quality โ€” not financial scrutiny.

โš ๏ธ Not eligible for eVisa โ€” Pakistan must use Indian High Commission

Pakistan nationals cannot apply for the India eVisa and must apply at the Indian High Commission in their country. Bangladesh nationals ARE eligible for the India eVisa. For Pakistan applicants, the High Commission process requires a thorough paper application โ€” employment confirmation, bank statements, flight itinerary, hotel bookings, and strong home-country ties evidence. Apply 4โ€“6 weeks before travel and include every document on the checklist.

What happens after you submit your India eVisa application

India's eVisa is fully online and processed within 72 hours in most cases. The typical window from document preparation to receiving your approved eVisa is 2โ€“4 days. Apply at least 7 days before departure to allow for any unexpected delays.

Select the right eVisa tier for your trip: 30 days (double entry, $25 for most), 1 year (multiple entry, $40 for most), or 5 years (multiple entry, $80 for most). US nationals pay $80 regardless of tier. Prepare your passport scan, photo, accommodation details, and bank statements before starting the application form.

Most eVisa applications are processed within 72 hours. You will receive an email notification when your eVisa is ready. During peak travel seasons (Octoberโ€“March) and around Indian public holidays, processing can extend to 4โ€“5 days. Do not contact the helpdesk within the first 72 hours.

Stay rules โ€” explained

How long can you stay in India?

India's eVisa comes in three tiers with very different stay structures. The 30-day eVisa is double entry with a firm 30-day cap per visit. The 1-year and 5-year eVisa are multiple entry with a maximum of 180 days per visit and no per-trip minimum. Choosing the right tier before you apply is important โ€” you cannot upgrade after approval.

30

Days โ€” 30-day eVisa

Maximum stay per visit on the 30-day e-Tourist Visa. Double entry โ€” you may enter twice, each time for up to 30 days. Previous 60-day re-entry gap largely abolished.

180

Days โ€” 1-year & 5-year

Maximum stay per visit on the multiple-entry 1-year or 5-year e-Tourist Visa. No minimum gap between visits โ€” but each individual stay must not exceed 180 days.

33

Designated eVisa airports

India's eVisa is only valid at 33 designated international airports โ€” not at land borders. Check your entry airport is on the approved list before you travel.

India strictly enforces the 180-day per-visit limit on 1-year and 5-year eVisa holders. Overstaying, even by a single day, results in a fine and can affect future India visa applications. The 30-day eVisa is double-entry โ€” re-entry restrictions that previously required a 60-day gap have been largely removed; confirm current entry conditions at indianvisaonline.gov.in before you travel.
